The Canadian Bank Note Company's involvement here is worth noting — CBN had produced Israeli currency going back decades, and this note continued that relationship into the mid-1980s. Zvi Narkiss, who contributed to the engraving, was himself a significant figure in Israeli typography and graphic design, making his credit on a banknote something more than routine.
The New Sheqel series launched in 1986 following the 1985 economic stabilization plan, which slashed triple-digit inflation by introducing the new currency at a rate of 1,000 old sheqalim to one new sheqel. This 1 NIS note represents the lowest denomination in that post-crisis series.
