Obverse description Cast bronze cash coin with a central square hole. Four Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, read top-bottom then right-left: 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying this as a coin of the Sangpyeong Treasury (Joseon Bureau of Exchange). The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within a plain field, with no decorative border. The obverse follows the standard Joseon cash-coin convention established from 1633 onward.

Reverse description The reverse bears three Chinese characters arranged around the square central hole. The mint mark 開 (Kae), denoting the Kaesong Township Military Office (開城管理營), appears at the top. At the bottom is the character 日 (Il, meaning 'sun'), indicating the series designation. To the right appears the numeral 八 (8), denoting serial number 8 within the series. The characters are cast in plain relief against an unadorned field, consistent with standard Joseon Dynasty cash-coin practice.
