| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform formation around a central square hole. Reading top to bottom: 常平 (Sangpyeong), referring to the Sangpyeong Office (Department of Price Stabilization of the Korean Joseon Dynasty); reading right to left: 通寶 (Tongbo), meaning 'current currency' or 'circulating treasure.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) style, cast in relief against a flat field, with a plain inner rim surrounding the square perforation and a plain outer rim encircling the coin. |
