Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo) encircles the square perforation, rendered in regular script (kaishu) style. The raised characters are set against a flat, unadorned field bounded by an inner rim surrounding the square hole and an outer raised rim encircling the coin. The surfaces show the characteristic granular texture of sand-cast bronze production. |

Attribution to the specific office behind this mark has been a persistent point of disagreement among Korean numismatists.
