Sher Ali Khan's second reign (1868–1879) was spent navigating an increasingly untenable position between Russian expansion from the north and British pressure from the east. His 1871 gold mohur issue from Kabul reflects a moment of relative stability before the Second Anglo-Afghan War shattered it entirely. The mohur denomination itself was inherited from Mughal monetary tradition, retained by successive Afghan rulers as the prestige gold unit of account.
Fr#18 is scarce in any condition — Afghan gold of this period circulated hard and was frequently melted when political circumstances changed.
