Ranajit Malla ruled Bhaktapur as the last independent king before the Gorkha conquest of 1769, and coins from his reign document the final decades of the Newar palace kingdoms in the Kathmandu Valley. Bhaktapur, the smallest of the three valley kingdoms, maintained its own mint and coinage traditions distinct from Kathmandu and Patan throughout this period.
This 1722 issue falls early in his reign, which began around 1722 and stretched to the collapse — making this among the first coins struck under his authority.
