Frederik I came to the Danish throne in 1523 after leading the rebellion that deposed his nephew Christian II, and his coinage program reflected a kingdom still sorting out its financial and religious identity — the Reformation was actively reshaping Danish institutions throughout his reign. The 1 Mark denomination itself was a relatively new unit in Danish monetary reckoning, tied to ongoing efforts to align northern European silver coinage with Lübeck-influenced weight standards.

Galster's UU#53 classification places this piece within a closely studied sequence, and the .875 fineness is consistent with the silver standard maintained at Copenhagen through this period before later debasements under Christian III.
