Bad Doberan's municipal savings bank issued this 1 Mark note as Notgeld — emergency small-change currency produced by thousands of German towns during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. Flemming & Wiskott in Glogau were among the more prolific printers of this material, supplying municipalities across northern Germany with competently produced notes at a time when official currency was either hoarded or simply unavailable in small denominations.

Klippert's design credit is notable — most Notgeld of this type went unsigned by their designers.
