Grünberg (now Zielona Góra, Poland) was a significant textile center in Lower Silesia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1914–1923, its Magistrat issued emergency Notgeld to cover the acute shortage of small change that plagued local commerce during the war and its aftermath. The Johannes Arndt press in Jena supplied a number of municipal clients across Germany during this period, acting essentially as a commercial Notgeld printer for hire rather than any official monetary authority.
