Denomination numerals '1 M' appear in the upper left and upper right corners against a pale ground, while the town name 'Oldenburg i. Holst.' is set in bold Gothic lettering within a ruled panel at the foot. A decorative zigzag border frames the entire composition, with the printer's imprint running along the lower margin. |

Oldenburg in Holstein — not to be confused with the Duchy of Oldenburg or the city of Oldenburg in Lower Saxony — was a small Baltic coastal town whose magistrate issued this note under the emergency currency provisions that proliferated across Germany after the Reichsbank's coin shortages became acute in the early 1920s. The printer, C. Fränckel Nchfg. C. Will, was a local firm, meaning this Notgeld never left the region's production and distribution chain.
Wilhelm Johannsen's involvement as designer suggests the note was treated as more than a stopgap — local Notgeld commissions were frequently used as a form of civic promotion, and designers were sometimes paid in the very currency they illustrated.
