Obverse description The obverse is divided into three vertical panels with a blue and gold colour scheme. The central panel carries a large oval vignette with the elaborate quartered coat of arms of the former Electorate of Hesse, supported by two rampant gold lions beneath a royal crown, all set against a blue ground with scrollwork surround. The left panel bears a smaller municipal arms with crossed mining tools in red on white, accompanied by the motto 'Glück auf! Hier wohnt ein rei Geschlecht', while the right panel displays a red cross on white with the motto 'Standhaft und treu!'. The denomination 'Eine Mark' appears in Gothic script in both upper side panels, and the lower margin carries the issuing inscription 'Philippsthal an der Werra am 1. Oktober 1921. Der Gemeindevorstand' in elaborate calligraphic lettering.

Reverse description The reverse is arranged in three vertical panels printed in warm brown tones. The central panel presents a detailed architectural vignette of the local Kursaal (spa hall), a neoclassical building with arched windows and a portico, set against a dramatic sky with trees to either side and its reflection rendered in the foreground. The left panel carries a caricature figure of a convalescent spa guest labelled 'Genesener', while the right panel shows a classically draped female allegorical figure labelled 'Sanitas' holding a cup and wreath. The denomination 'Eine Mark' appears in Gothic script at the foot of both side panels, with 'Philippsthal a.d. Werra' inscribed along the lower margin of the central panel.
