The outer panels each carry a Jugendstil architectural vignette — the Rödertor gate complex at left and the Strafturm at right — rendered in an Expressionist manner. Rothenburg ob der Tauber was among hundreds of German municipalities that issued Notgeld during the inflation spiral of 1921, but the town made a deliberate effort to produce notes with genuine artistic value rather than the crude emergency scrip typical of smaller issuers. Adolf Hosse, a local artist closely associated with Rothenburg's self-conscious cultivation of its medieval image, brought a woodcut-influenced graphic sensibility to the series.
The print run of over twelve million for a single Mark denomination from a town of a few thousand inhabitants reflects just how rapidly purchasing power was collapsing — velocity of circulation, not genuine demand, drove those numbers.
