| Beschrijving voorzijde | The note is divided into three vertical panels within a heavy black border, executed in polychrome lithography in teal, ochre, and black. The outer panels each carry a Jugendstil architectural vignette — the Rödertor gate complex at left and the Strafturm at right — rendered in an Expressionist manner. The central panel bears a decorative cartouche with an arched guilloche header enclosing the large numeral '1', beneath which Gothic blackletter text gives the denomination, issuing authority, serial number, place, date of issue, and the facsimile signature of the Stadtrat. |

Rothenburg ob der Tauber was among hundreds of German municipalities that issued Notgeld during the inflation spiral of 1921, but the town made a deliberate effort to produce notes with genuine artistic value rather than the crude emergency scrip typical of smaller issuers. Adolf Hosse, a local artist closely associated with Rothenburg's self-conscious cultivation of its medieval image, brought a woodcut-influenced graphic sensibility to the series.
The print run of over twelve million for a single Mark denomination from a town of a few thousand inhabitants reflects just how rapidly purchasing power was collapsing — velocity of circulation, not genuine demand, drove those numbers.
