Issued in 1920 during the plebiscite period that followed Germany's defeat in the First World War, this municipal emergency note — a Notgeld — comes from Lunderup, a small community in the disputed Schleswig border zone. The referendum of February 1920 ultimately returned Northern Schleswig to Denmark, meaning notes like this one were issued under German municipal authority just as that authority was about to dissolve. Gebr. & Kunze of Flensburg were active printers of Schleswig-region Notgeld throughout this transitional moment.
The single Bartelsen signature reflects the streamlined authorization typical of small-commune emergency issues with minimal bureaucratic apparatus.
