Neheim an der Ruhr, a Westphalian industrial town on the Möhne River, issued this Notgeld note during the acute small-change shortage that swept Germany from 1914 onward, as hoarding stripped metal coinage from circulation almost immediately after mobilization. Municipal authorities across the Reich stepped into the vacuum, printing their own emergency fractions with varying degrees of official oversight.
The Stadt Neheim series is unlisted in several major Notgeld references, which makes attribution to a specific printer difficult. Neheim itself was later absorbed into Arnsberg district consolidations — a detail that occasionally causes confusion in provenance documentation.
