Corvey's right to mint was contested for much of the sixteenth century, with the abbey's coinage authority technically derived from a medieval imperial grant that secular neighbors repeatedly challenged in the Reichskammergericht. Reinhard II held the abbacy for only two years before his death in 1561, making this mariengroschen one of the briefest-tenured issues in the Corvey series.
