Kirin Province's 1884 pattern series emerged during the Qing court's fraught deliberations over modernizing its monetary system — a debate that dragged through the 1880s as provincial authorities pushed for steam-press minting while Beijing remained ambivalent. These patterns were struck as proof-of-concept pieces, almost certainly produced in small quantities to demonstrate mechanical minting capability rather than for any planned circulation. Kann 920 is among the rarer of the Kirin pattern entries, and white metal specimens of this mace denomination surface infrequently even in specialist sales.
