Luigini were struck across dozens of small Italian lordships in the mid-seventeenth century not for domestic use but almost exclusively for export to the Levant, where they circulated as trade currency in Ottoman markets. The Lordship of Torriglia, a minor Ligurian fief held by the Doria family, issued this piece under Violante Doria Lomellini as a deliberate imitation of the Dombes type — one of the most trusted luigino designs in the eastern Mediterranean trade network. Imitating a French princely type was standard commercial logic: familiarity in the bazaars of Aleppo and Sidon mattered more than heraldic accuracy.
The MIR 569 reference places this among several die varieties documented for the Torriglia series, with III#4/7 indicating a specific pairing within that sequence.
