| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Louis XVI facing left, with elaborately coiffed and powdered hair dressed in the fashion of the late Ancien Régime, the engraver's signature DUVIV incuse on the truncation. A small five-pointed star appears in the lower field. The circular Latin legend surrounding the effigy reads LUD·XVI·D·G·FR·ET NAV·REX, denoting the king's title as King of France and Navarre by the Grace of God. The portrait, executed in the neoclassical style by Pierre-Benjamin Duvivier, displays fine relief modelling against a flat, unadorned field. |
