The Monetary Authority of Swaziland was a transitional institution, established in 1974 to manage currency ahead of the creation of the Central Bank of Swaziland in 1979. This note is from the very first issue under that authority — Pick 1, the opening entry in Swazi paper money. The lilangeni had only been introduced in 1974, replacing the rand at par, and the kingdom was still operating within the Common Monetary Area with South Africa.
De La Rue's work here is clean but unshowy. The signatures pair R.P. Stephens, the expatriate financial officer, with E.A.Z. Mayisela — a pairing that neatly reflects the administrative transition underway.
