Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Philip II facing left, rendered in low relief in the late Renaissance style, set within a recessed circular field. The effigy displays curled hair and a high ruffled collar characteristic of Spanish Habsburg portraiture of the period. A hand mintmark, denoting the Antwerp mint, appears beneath the bust. The surrounding circular legend reads PHS. D. G. HISP Z REX. DVX. BRA., separated from the central field by an inner beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

The "des États" designation marks this issue as a product of the States of Brabant rather than the Spanish Crown — struck during the early phase of the revolt against Philip II when provincial estates briefly assumed fiscal and monetary authority. The southern Netherlands were still nominally under Habsburg control in name, but the mint at Antwerp was operating under insurgent direction by 1578, a fragile arrangement that collapsed entirely when Parma retook Antwerp in 1585.

Copper liards from this period circulated hard in a region hemorrhaging silver to military expenditure on both sides. Survivors in clean condition are genuinely uncommon.
