Latvia's 2002 commemorative program marked the country's return to the Summer Olympics as an independent nation — a participation that had been impossible during Soviet occupation. The Greco-Roman wrestling issue was part of a broader Olympic series released ahead of Athens 2004.
Latvian wrestlers had a notable pre-war tradition under the first republic, with Jānis Daliņš and other athletes competing internationally before the 1940 annexation erased the country from Olympic rosters for over five decades.
