Informazioni aggiuntive

Historical Context: Issued by Latvia in 2011, this 1 Lats silver coin commemorates the 800th anniversary of Riga's coinage right, granted in 1211 by Bishop Albert. This event marked Riga's burgeoning economic and political autonomy within medieval Livonia, establishing it as a vital trading hub and prominent Hanseatic League member. The right to mint currency was a crucial marker of sovereignty and power. Modern Latvia's issuance proudly acknowledges Riga's profound historical legacy.

Artistry: The design, by graphic artist Laimonis Šēnbergs and plaster modeler Ligita Franckeviča, reflects contemporary Latvian numismatic style. The obverse features the Republic of Latvia's large coat of arms and the year 2011. The reverse depicts a historically significant pfennig, an early Riga coin from 1211, encircled by "RIGAI 800 GADI MONĒTAS KALŠANAS TIESĪBAS" (Riga 800 years of coinage right) and "1 LATS." This design bridges Riga's ancient numismatic past with modern Latvian coinage.

Technical/Grading: Struck in .925 fine silver (12.50g, 28mm), this coin exhibits high production standards typical of modern Latvian commemoratives. Key high-points for grading include the intricate details of the obverse coat of arms, notably the lion's mane and griffon's feathers. On the reverse, critical areas are the fine details of the depicted medieval pfennig, its central motif, and legends. A full, sharp strike is expected, often with a proof-like finish. Absence of bag marks or hairlines is paramount for top-tier uncirculated grades.
