Issued under the FAO coin program, which ran globally from the late 1960s onward as a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization initiative to promote agricultural awareness through circulating coinage. The Maldives participation reflected the islands' dependence on marine resources rather than conventional farming — a quiet irony embedded in the FAO framework, which was designed primarily with agrarian economies in mind.
