Описание аверса	Right-facing bust of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, rendered in high sculptural relief by engraver Paul Vincze, occupying the upper two-thirds of the field. The portrait depicts the President in civilian attire with a high collar, his close-cropped hair rendered with fine textural detail. The legend MALAWI appears in large incuse letters along a curved ribbon or banner at the base of the bust, spanning the lower portion of the obverse field.

The date 1971 appears in the mid-field below the arms, with the denomination ONE KWACHA inscribed in large letters along the lower rim.
