Salah ibn Ali ruled Aceh during a period of rapid commercial expansion along the Malacca Strait, where the sultanate was aggressively positioning itself as the dominant pepper-trading power following the Portuguese seizure of Malacca in 1511. Gold kupang of this reign circulated primarily as trade currency in a network stretching from Gujarat to the South China Sea, passing through hands that would never have considered them "coins" in any European sense — they were weighed, not counted.
The kupang denomination represents the smallest practical unit in Acehnese gold coinage, with the larger mas divided into four of them.
