The kupang served as the fractional gold unit across the Malay peninsula during a period when Kelantan's trade networks stretched into Siam and the South China Sea routes. These anonymous issues — bearing no ruler's name — were common practice in Kelantanese minting, making attribution to a specific sultan nearly impossible without accompanying archival evidence.
