Joseph II held the co-regency under Maria Theresa from 1765 until her death in 1780, a period marked by constant friction between mother and son over the pace of reform. These Hungarian kreuzer issues were struck during a sustained attempt to rationalize the Habsburg monetary system across multiple crowns simultaneously — a project Maria Theresa pushed aggressively in her final decade. Joseph's name appearing on Hungarian coinage during this period reflects the formal co-regency structure rather than any autonomous Hungarian monetary policy, which remained firmly under Vienna's direction.
