Neuchâtel passed to Henri I de Longueville in 1573, and his coinage reflects the transitional political character of the principality — nominally sovereign, perpetually contested, and caught between French dynastic ambition and Swiss cantonal pressure. The 'H' mintmark designation and the antique crown variety documented by Froidevaux suggest this was among the earlier die configurations of his kreuzer production, before the series settled into more consistent typology.
Billon coinage of this weight and period circulated hard in the Neuchâtelois market towns and wore quickly.
