Charles Theodor inherited the Palatinate electorate in 1743 following the extinction of the Sulzbach line, and this small kreuzer dates to the very opening years of his long reign — he would go on to rule until 1799, later absorbing Bavaria in 1777. The brevity of the 1745–1746 striking window suggests a transitional issue, likely superseded by revised coinage as his administration consolidated.
