Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was a tiny Catholic principality squeezed between Baden and Württemberg, and by 1842 its ruling Zollern branch was already in quiet negotiation with Prussia over absorption. The principality was formally ceded to Prussia in 1849 — making this kreuzer series among the last independent coinage issues the house would ever authorize. Charles, the reigning prince, signed away sovereignty less than a decade after these were struck.
