| Additional information |
Appenzell Innerrhoden was among the smallest and most fiercely independent of the Swiss cantons, having separated from Ausserrhoden in 1597 along confessional lines — Innerrhoden remaining staunchly Catholic while its neighbor turned Reformed. By 1742, the canton still maintained its own monetary output despite a population that rarely exceeded a few thousand, issuing small billon pieces primarily to serve local market and ecclesiastical transactions rather than any broader regional commerce.
The HMZ 2#43e designation places this among a closely related sequence of Kreuzer issues spanning several decades, distinguished by subtle die variations that Divo and Tobler catalogued with unusual granularity given the type's modest production scale.
