A central oval vignette set against a yellow ground shows a water tower in dark purple-brown, flanked symmetrically by two yellow roundels each bearing the red numeral '1' over the inscription 'KORONA'. Világítási és Vízmű Részvénytársaság — the Lighting and Waterworks Joint Stock Company — was a Budapest municipal utility, and its decision to issue paper money in 1920 speaks directly to the catastrophic small-change shortage that gripped Hungary in the immediate postwar years. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system left the country without a functioning coin supply, and private firms, municipalities, and cooperatives filled the gap with their own emergency scrip, collectively known as szükségpénz.
