Additional information

The KM#8.2a designation marks the copper-plated steel transition from the earlier bronze composition — a cost-driven retooling that coincided with Nigeria's broader economic turbulence as oil revenues collapsed following the late-1980s price crash. By 1991, the kobo's purchasing power had eroded so severely that 1-kobo coins were functionally worthless in daily commerce, meaning most examples were simply never spent.
