The Kipper- und Wipperzeit ("clipping and see-sawing" period) of 1619–1623 was one of the most catastrophic currency debasements in Central European history, driven largely by the financial pressures of the Thirty Years' War. Mints across the Habsburg lands — including Vienna — were effectively leased to private consortia who systematically debased the coinage, pocketing the difference between face value and metal content. Ferdinand II's administration was complicit, extracting war revenue through seigniorage while the commercial economy collapsed under worthless small change.
The 150 Kreuzer denomination reflects the inflated accounting of the period rather than any stable monetary reality. By 1623, the Imperial Münzedikt forced a brutal revaluation, and most of this debased issue was reminted or simply abandoned in hoards.
