Lakkanna Dandanayaka served as a powerful military commander and administrator under Devaraya II, the Vijayanagara ruler whose reign marked the empire's greatest territorial expansion in the first half of the fifteenth century. The right of subordinate commanders to strike their own copper currency — distinct from royal gold — reflects the considerable administrative autonomy the Vijayanagara court extended to its senior dandanayakas, a practice without close parallel in contemporary Deccan sultanates.
