The third series of Renminbi was in planning as early as the mid-1950s but its rollout extended across two decades, with individual denominations released sporadically rather than as a coordinated set. This 1 Jiao was among the earlier releases, printed domestically at the Beijing facility — a deliberate political statement of self-reliance following the Soviet withdrawal of technical assistance in 1960, which had disrupted several state printing programs.
Paper quality on this series is notoriously uneven across print runs, and the 1 Jiao in particular shows measurable variation in ink saturation between early and late impressions.
