Aversbeschreibung Left-facing bust of Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Republic of China, rendered in moderate relief within a wreath border that encircles the inner field. The Chinese legend reading 'Republic of China Year 38' surrounds the portrait, with the date characters distributed to the upper left and right of the effigy. The portrait depicts Sun Yat-sen with a short-cropped hairstyle and a slight beard, wearing a high-collared jacket. The wreath border, composed of stylized olive or laurel sprigs, frames the entire central design and separates it from the coin's rim.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Issued in 1949 as the Nationalist government collapsed on the mainland and the Republic of China relocated to Taiwan, this coin belongs to a currency system hastily reconstituted under catastrophic conditions. The ROC had just introduced the New Taiwan Dollar in June 1949 to replace the hyperinflated Old Taiwan Dollar at a rate of 40,000 to one — a ratio that illustrates exactly how badly the previous monetary order had disintegrated.

The brass composition was a practical choice for a government operating on severely constrained resources after losing the civil war to the Communists.
