Louis the Pious ruled Württemberg during a period of acute confessional tension, navigating the duchy's Lutheran commitments against pressure from Habsburg Catholic neighbors. The 1572 date places this issue just one year after the promulgation of the Formula of Concord's early drafts — a moment when Lutheran territorial princes were actively consolidating doctrinal and political identity through every available medium, coinage among them.
The Davenport SG#140 attribution situates this within the German States Guldenthalers, a denomination that emerged as a practical bridge between the Thaler and older Rhenish Gulden accounting traditions.
