The Surinaamsche Bank was established in 1865 as a private institution with note-issuing rights, operating under Dutch colonial authority at a time when Suriname's monetary supply was chronically undersupplied with small-denomination instruments. Silver vouchers — zilverbonnen in Dutch — were issued as substitutes for coin, which consistently drained out of the colony faster than it arrived. The 1 Gulden denomination was aimed squarely at everyday wage and retail transactions.
Pick 102 is among the harder pieces in the Surinaamsche Bank series to locate in collectible condition, owing to its heavy circulation in the lowest commercial tiers.
