The K.K. Reichs-Central-Cassa was the imperial treasury office, not a central bank in any modern sense — these Gulden notes functioned as state treasury certificates rather than bank-issued currency, a distinction that mattered in Vienna's fractured post-1866 monetary politics. Ferdinand Schirnböck was among the finest intaglio engravers working in Austria at the time, and his hand is evident in the precision of this issue. Josef von Storck, better known as an applied arts reformer and director of the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, brought an unusual design sensibility to the series.
The 1882 date places this note in the final years of the Gulden's life — the Austro-Hungarian Krone reform was already in discussion, officially enacted in 1892.
