The eagle fills the inner circle almost entirely, its detailed feathering and powerful posture conveying imperial authority. A beaded border separates the central device from the surrounding Latin legend, which records the date 1523 and identifies the coin as a gold issue of Deventer. The overall composition is typical of gold gulden struck by the three IJssel cities under Charles V's imperial mandate. |
