Obverse description Central field features a crowned imperial orb set within a trilobe (trefoil) frame, the three lobes formed by interlocking arcs in a Gothic style characteristic of early sixteenth-century German goldsmithing. A small cross surmounts the orb, and the entire device is contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, separated from the inner circle by a plain band, reads in Latin: KAROLVS ROMANO IMPERATO, identifying Charles V as Emperor of the Romans. The coin exhibits the irregular flan typical of hammered gold coinage of the period.
