Marshal François Joseph Lefebvre's siege and capture of Danzig in 1807 earned him his ducal title — he became Duc de Dantzig — and placed the city under French-administered governance until 1814. This trial strike dates from that occupation period, when the question of what coinage the semi-autonomous Free City would produce under Napoleonic suzerainty remained genuinely unsettled. Silver trial pieces for this denomination are exceptionally rare survivals of that administrative uncertainty.
