The initials S and O flank the shield in the left and right fields respectively, serving as monogram references to Secondotto (Secondo Ottone) Paleologo. The entire design is enclosed within a circular beaded border, with the ruler's titulature rendered in Gothic Latin lettering around the periphery. Secondotto Paleologo governed Asti for fewer than five years as a Montferrat marquis ruling a city that had cycled through Angevin, Visconti, and Montferrat overlordship within living memory. His coinage is among the rarest civic issues of Piedmont — CNI records only a handful of confirmed specimens — reflecting both the brevity of his authority over the city and the political instability that ended with Asti passing back to the Visconti shortly after his death in 1378.
