| Obverse description | Two standing figures face one another in a formal, hieratic composition within a beaded border. At left, the Doge Pietro Gradenigo, clad in ducal robes ornamented with a row of pearls, receives the vexillum (banner or gonfalon) from St. Mark the Evangelist, patron saint of Venice, who stands at right in episcopal vestments. The letter 'D' appears on the staff of the banner between the two figures. The surrounding Latin legend names the reigning Doge. The style is characteristic of late 13th-century Venetian hammered coinage, with flat, elongated figures and incised drapery. |
