Galeazzo II Visconti died in 1378, leaving Milan to his son Giangaleazzo while his brother Bernabò continued to rule the eastern territories. The Pegione — named from a dialectal term whose precise etymology remains disputed, possibly relating to a weight measure — was a dominant silver denomination in Lombard commerce throughout the second half of the fourteenth century, circulating widely into territories well beyond Visconti political control. The .622 fineness reflects deliberate debasement pressure that characterized Italian communal mints competing for regional trade dominance.
Giangaleazzo's eventual coup against Bernabò in 1385 ended the divided lordship, which gives this issue its tight terminal date.
