Reverse description Saint Ambrose, patron of Milan, is depicted enthroned in full pontifical vestments, wearing a mitre and holding a crozier in his left hand. The saint is shown seated facing forward in a formal hieratic pose, draped in richly detailed episcopal robes with fine drapery folds rendered in the Gothic manner. A whip or scourge, his traditional attribute, is held in his right hand. The figure is set within a circular field surrounded by a beaded border and an outer Latin legend naming the saint and the city.
