Ragusa — modern Dubrovnik — maintained formal independence largely through sophisticated diplomacy, paying tribute simultaneously to both the Ottoman Empire and, at various points, Hungary and Venice. This coin's century-long production run reflects that studied neutrality: the city-state kept its mint active and its silver circulating without interruption through some of the most volatile politics in Mediterranean history.
