| Reverse description | Saint Ambrose, patron of Milan, depicted nimbate and enthroned in full pontifical vestments, facing the viewer in a hieratic frontal pose. The saint holds a crozier in his left hand and a scourge in his right, emblematic of his authority as Bishop of Milan. Large Gothic letters appear to either side of the enthroned figure, flanking the composition symmetrically. The bold, stylised rendering of the figure is consistent with the Milanese Gothic die-cutting tradition of the late Trecento. The abbreviated legend D` B` appears in the field. |
